Phillip Bissell

Educated at Portsmouth and receiving B.Ed (Hons) in Art and Design, Bissell continues to teach and is Head of Art at
Stalham High School in Norwich. Working in oil, acrylic, ink in different combinations he continues to find inspiration in the surreal and unnatural. Speaking of his paintings he says “ Their content concerns people and landscapes.
Each landscape is a set, ready for actors to begin an un-named play. Thus, the narrative is a crucial element of my work.” To each unresolved scene, the viewer is asked to bring his or her own experience, completing and extending it. Most are concerned with fragments of time and ask the viewer to pose the questions: What has happened? What is happening? What is likely to happen next ?
